The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holyoke hosted a team of five bright engineering students from UMass Amherst as they ran a tech program for middle school students. For two weeks the youth applied electrical engineering skills in order to create a beat machine or “beat box”. Friday, July 8, 2011, the final day of the program, the students and youth gave an interactive presentation.
During this presentation the youth were able to show off their final products! Youth also got to demonstrate how their beat box worked and explain how they were constructed.
At the end of the day the youth were able to bring their beat box home with them! We give a special thanks to the following UMass participants: Sean Klaiber, Melissa Lau, Danil Tyulmankov, Danielle Dowling, Guillermo Velasco, Carol Soules (Community Service Learning), and Professor Baird Soules.
Circuits and Beats is sponsored by the UMass Amherst College of Engineering and was developed by UMass Amherst’s M5, with support from CAITE, AmeriCorps, StandardAero, and other donors.
